Sharing Food @ a Public House

“You going Mohamed Sultan? No one go to Mohamed Sultan these days!” cried the cab driver. Well, I do, I mumbled  under me breath. “No one go there now! There got what now?” There’s still food places, I replied, amazed by my incredible patience. “Really? Got meh?” Got. It may not be as rowdy as the heyday of pubs such as Next Page and Last Page, and other dining and entertainment outlets have since came and went, but still, some gems can still be found there and Spathe Public House is one of them.

Spathe is a causal restaurant  with cool decor and an even cooler menu. They emphasised communal dining – read: encourages people to share food – and hence it would really be worth your while if you came here with a whole bunch of friends so you can order a good selection of huge dishes that one and all can happily share in with a bite here and a spoonful there. To put it mildly, this place is not recommended for those who are terrified of sharing germs even with loved ones….


Happy Hour here ain’t bad. In fact, it’s blooming good considering – unless I misread the menu –  it starts as early as 11am and ends at 8pm.  HH beers are priced from $11 to $15, but the best choice are the House Pours which are one for one. My fave drink so far is the sparkling sweet Moscato (pictured above) which is really delicious at $16 divide by two. What great too is that the waiters/waitresses will keep count of the Happy Hour orders you made and will only serve you your “2nd” glasses as and when you request for it. Sweet.


So far all the dishes we tried have been great. If you want something light while waiting for latecomers, you can’t go wrong with the Spathe Garlic fries that come stacked in a flower pot. Or the Spicy Buffalo Wings, although this should be shared as it may looked small but still very meaty and you should save some space for other dishes…


One great dish to share is the wonderfully named Chicken & the Sea which is basically sumptuous Spanish paella rice, delightfully cooked with seafood and some chicken. Careful to order the right size – it’s a hefty $78 for a big pan but if you have, say, just a small group of 3-5, consider the $25 individual portion instead (pictured). Same goes for the Confit Duck Puff which is something to savour as its very uniquely done.


Spathe has a couple of classics that should not be missed. The 12-Hour Slow-cooked Pork Belly (above) is simply out of this world. Tender yet tastefully succulent, this is one dish I wished I didn’t have to share with others!  Lined with mashed potato and topped with a poached egg, it’s just nice for one really… Another yummy dish is the Chicken Cordon Bleu. I don’t know why they named it chicken cos we only wanted it for the Parma Ham and the joy it brings along with the springy cheese, although the accompanying  creamy spinach was a tad too sour for my taste.


I must say on my both visits, the waitresses have been quite good with their recommendations on what to eat, how many to order, what new things to try. This time round, our waitress (forgot to ask for her name) recommended something which was not on the menu – “Try Girlle, crispy fried mushrooms that taste like chicken, but are really mushrooms!” Oooookay. Let’s have one of that to make our lives more interesting. And wahey, it’s actually quite decent and tasty and goes very well with sweet wine (and I’m sure better with ice cold beer). So kudos to the service, I’ve been impressed to date. Desserts though not so as the selection is not very impressive. They should have something like the famous Swensen’s Earthquake that could feed a party of 10-12 seriously!

Probably the item that we missed trying each time was the Mohamed Sultan Meter Dog, the place’s signature signature dish. Well, that gives us  but one more reason to make a return trip with friends to Mohamed Sultan. The more the merrier. 🙂
