Happy “30th” Madonna!

M_ETC_smThe undisputed Queen of Pop turns 55 today but the magic number fans should be celebrating is “30 years in showbiz”, a milestone which Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone reached last month as it was way back in July 1983 when a “mid western girl in a bustier” burst into the pop scene with a self-titled album which produced pop gems such as ‘Holiday’ and ‘Borderline’ that have stood the test of time.

More than a gazillion T40 hits have come and gone in 3 decades – the timeless  ‘Like A Prayer and ‘Express Yourself’ from the critically acclaimed 1989’s Like A Prayer;  ‘Like a Virgin’, Material Girl’ and ‘Crazy for You’ from the smashing 1984’s Like A Virgin; ‘Papa Don’t Preach’, ‘Live To Tell’ and ‘Open Your Heart’ from the ultimate pop album 1986’s True Blue  and, gosh, not forgetting other acclaimed offerings from 1996’s Ray of Light and 2006’s Confessions on a Dance Floor. And the goodies from the movies too such as the classy ‘Vogue’ from Dick Tracy and the breezy ‘Beautiful Stranger’ from Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

OK, Madge may not appear to be ageing gracefully of late but when it comes to live performances – check out last year’s Silverstone Superbowl Half-time Show and the subsequent MDNA World Tour – the singer / dancer / author /  “actress” / director / mother-of-four proved that she still has what it takes to wow live audiences the world over. That she is the deserved winner of Billboard’s Top Touring Artist of 2012 cannot be disputed although, seriously woman, have the decency to start on time and not two hours after! And, enough with the guns-slinging already!

If the megastar just concentrate on the music and the performances – MDNA the latest album was strangely not very well marketed despite a number of great songs and long-drawn vanity sagas such as the “#secretproject” goes nowhere really –  I’m pretty sure Madge will be around for a good long while more…

Many happy returns, Madonna – and thanks for entertaining us for the last 3 decades…
