Margie @ Margaret Market

Margie The Market Bar @ Margaret Market offers local-flavored tacos and rice bowls, and an assortment of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Thanks to a WFH-on-a-Friday friend who decided to pop down for lunch yesterday, I finally get to sample the wares at Margie The Market Bar, one of the F&B outlets nestled within the boutique marketplace Margaret Market at Margaret Drive which is literally downstairs from my home.

Have to confess that I do try to refrain from eating too often at Margaret Market when one could easily get much cheaper and better tasting food from the Margaret Drive Hawker Centre which is just next door. But when hosting a friend, the air-conditioned Margaret Market admittedly does have its draws.

Anyhoo, after introducing my friend to all the eateries, she decided on Margie which offers rice bowls and tacos with local flavors, next to an array of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages ranging from craft beers to bubble teas.

Margie, which has its own seating counters, has placed mini menu stands at a couple of community tables but do check out their proper menus as promotional sets and/or discounts would be listed there.

For instance, if you order a rice bowl or tacos, you can order a soda can drink or classic bubble tea for $2, or a mini fries for $3.90.

So drinks-wise, we opted for a Coke and a Sprite each after ordering two rice bowls. (And if the guy at the South Korean convenience store emart24 wasn’t “out for lunch”, we would have gotten cheaper drinks from there…)

We decided to have a proper “big” set of fries to go along with our mains and opted for the Truffle Fries with Parmesan Cheese ($9.90). Served golden hot and crispy, the fries were yummy but though it had a generous sprinkling of parmesan and parsley, there was hardly any truffle flavor. The fries were however still tasty and munchable when the leftovers were brought home and later heated up for dinner.

My pal chose to have the Char Siew Pork Jowl Rice Bowl ($13.90) which, have to say, looked really good. The char siew with its sweet sauce was very tasty, but there were more fat bits than lean meat which was a shame. Otherwise, the veggies and huge poached egg were simply lovely, as was the ample blue pea rice.

I went for the Sambal Stingray Rice Bowl ($11.90) and considering that you can get a full-sized, well-cooked sambal stingray for just $12 at Alexandra Village Food Centre, the very small portion of sambal stingray in this bowl just didn’t seem quite worth it.

Its saving grace however is that the portion was very tasty, and together with all the other ingredients in the bowl—poached egg, well-steamed veggies and blue pea rice—it turned out to be not half bad. And there was surprisingly a lot of rice packed in that little brown cardboard bowl!

We wanted to try their tacos too and had ordered the Grilled “Chomp Chomp” Chicken Tacos ($5.90) but as the rice bowls were rather filling (primarily because of the rice), I ended up keeping this and the fries for dinner.

Okay, so tacos should be eaten when it’s hot and also, I prefer my tacos hard-shelled and with beef fillings. So a reheated soft shell tacos wasn’t exactly ideal. It was edible but did wish there was more chicken to chew on. The veggies were sufficient but for a person who can take spicy, the rather dry pounded chili spread placed on top of the chicken was a tad too strong for my taste.

Well, glad I finally get to try some of the foodfare at Margie. It is a tad on the pricey side, but will await the next opportunity to try their other bar food and draft beer.

Margie The Market Bar is at 38 Margaret Drive #01-01, Singapore 141038. Opens Tue-Thu 3pm-10pm, Fri-Sat 11.30am-11pm; & Sun 11.30am-10pm, closed on Mondays.

Margaret Market @ 38 Margaret Drive

Queenstown’s Margaret Market offers a host of food options from clam-centric cuisine to artisanal cakes and handcrafted ice cream.

As a resident and foodie living in the newly-expanded Dawson estate in Queenstown, joy is having yet another food-centric establishment literally at our doorstep in Margaret Drive—this time in the form of boutique marketplace, Margaret Market.

Comprising a curated selection of F&B brands, as well as health and fitness facilities, the air-conditioned Margaret Market is housed in the former Commonwealth Avenue Wet Market & Food Centre a.k.a the prominent “Block 38” in Margaret Drive (pictured below, its old and new look.)

Built in 1956, the two-storey conservation building with its distinctive parabolic-vaulted roof is a well-known landmark in Queenstown.

As a lifelong Queenstowner, it is quite a thrill to finally see the long-unutilized property having a new lease of life as a vibrant community space.

Sited next to the Margaret Drive Hawker Centre—where most of the hawkers from the now-defunct Tanglin Halt Hawker Centre have relocated to—here’s what you can expect to savor at Margaret Market.

1. WaWa Lala Bee Hoon (#01-02/03)

Like its outlet in Fortune Centre, WaWa offers clam-centric dishes cooked in a variety of ways and served with rice, noodles, soup, or as is. I tried its Power Sambal Lala with Tasty Rice ($10.90) and Fresh Clams with Signature Homemade Garlic Butter Sauce ($8.90), and both were scrumptious, especially the latter. Diners can choose to eat at WaWa’s own dining area or at the market’s communal seating area.
Opens Tue-Sun 11.30am-9.30pm, closed on Mondays.

2. The Homme Baker (#01-08)

This bakery is known for its fancy Swiss cheese-shaped chocolate shell cakes named T&J cakes as inspired by the cartoon cat-and-mouse duo, Tom and Jerry. With six flavors including yuzu and strawberry shortcake, I tried the Original T&J ($8.80) with chocolate cake, cheese and caramel within the chocolate shell and it was rich, decadent and deliciously sweet. You can also get coffee and whole cakes ($50-$75) such as Carrot, Mandarin Orange and Upside Down Cake.
Opens Tue-Sun 10.30am-8.30pm, closed on Mondays.

3. Bowen’s Café (#01-04)

Bowen’s Cafe, which has another outlet in Pandan Garden, offers pasta dishes ($11.50-$25) and western food favorites such as steaks and grilled/fried meat items ($7-$30.50). I tried its Fried Spring Chicken (Half $10.50) served with straight cut fries, baked beans and coleslaw which was decently good, as were their Three Fried Chicken Wings ($7) served with fries.
Opens daily 10.30am-2.30pm; 4.30pm-9.30pm.

4. Urban Folks (#01-07)

This Australian-style café serves sammies (toasted sandwiches) and jaffles (toasted sandwiches with sealed edges) with interesting fillings. The Eggsquisite Jaffle ($9.80) for example comes with Asian chili eggs, chicken spam and cheese. I tried their Hammin’ Cheesus Sammie ($12.50) which was a crispy sweet-cum-savory ham-and-cheese combo served with crisps. It went down well with a very nice White Coffee ($5).
Opens daily Sun-Thu 9am-5.30pm; Fri and Sat 9am-9pm.

5. Creamier (#01-5A)

Thanks to the 1-for-1 deals during their first weekend, this popular ice cream brand attracted long queues that went outside the building! Known for its handcrafted ice cream with unique flavors, golden waffles and even doggie ice cream, the Margaret Market outlet is Creamier’s first kiosk concept so they don’t serve their waffles here (bah!) but you can get them in frozen form. Single/double scoop in either cup or waffle cone is $4.30/$7.60, while a Pint Standard is $13.90.
Opens daily 12noon-10pm.

6. Emart24 (#01-10) [March 2024 Update: Permanently closed.]

With outlets in NEX and Jurong Point, this South Korean convenience store definitely has its fans, especially students who love their instant bowl and cup noodles which can be cooked at the hot water dispensers at the stall itself. Shelves are packed full of South Korean goodies from bottled drinks to snacks, from ramyeon toppings to cooked food such as boneless fried chicken and gim mari.
Opens daily 10am-10pm.

7. Cu.Ra.Te (#01-05)

One of the first stalls at the market to open, Cu.Ra.Te sells a variety of imported fresh fruits and vegetables. The fruits are really fresh and occasionally there are bargains to be found. There’s also a juice station if you fancy your fruits in semi-liquid form.
Opens daily 9am-9.30pm.

8. Margie (#01-01)

Touting itself as the “conserved market’s bar”, Margie offers a variety of alcohol including beer, wine and champagne. It also serves tacos and rice bowls inspired by local flavors such as Ramly Cheeseburger Tacos ($7.90), Sambal Stingray Rice Bowl ($11.90) and Char Siew Pork Jowl Rice Bowl ($13.90). There’s also varied-flavored fries such as Truffle Fries with Parmesan ($9.90) and Singapore Chili Crab Fries ($13.90).
Opens Tue-Thu 3pm-10pm, Fri-Sat 11.30am-11pm; & Sun 11.30am-10pm, closed on Mondays.

9. Chicken Soup Rice (#01-06)

This stall sells a trendy food style from China featuring rice/noodles/vermicelli bathed in chicken soup brewed for hours with a variety of mushrooms such as Delicious Mountain Mushroom Soup Set ($8.80) or Fresh Mushroom and Bamboo Pith Chicken Soup Set ($8.80). Cold dishes such as Sliced Pig Ears in Chili Oil ($6) and Sliced Beef in Sauce ($6) are also available.
Opens Wed-Mon 10am-9pm, closed on Tuesdays.

10. Petit Fangko (#01-09) [March 2024 Update: Defunct, replaced by Fernando’s New York Slices (pizza)]

(Updated Sept 2023) Halal “Indomee Bar” Petit Fangko—a sister brand of Hongkong Street cafe Fangko which serves Indonesian cuisine—has finally opened. Signature dishes include Nasi Lemar Ayam Berempah ($14) and Smash Chimken which feature their signature spicy chicken for which you can choose the spicy level that your palate can tahan. Other foods include Eggs and Sourdough (411), Toast Avocado ($12), and Buttermilk Chicken Waffles ($17.50). For starters, I tried a plain Waffle with maple and butter ($8) which was enjoyable enough for a quick snack or a light meal.
Opens Tue-Sun 11am-9pm, closed on Mondays.

11. Ya Kun Kaya Toast (#02-05)

Finally, if you prefer local-styled coffee and traditional kaya toast, pop up to the second floor for this well-known local brand which serves its familiar popular sets of toasted and steamed bread items, along with a variety of kopi and teh. It’s the only eatery on level 2, which you can access by using the escalator at the Margaret Drive Hawker Centre next door.
Opens daily Mon-Thu 7.30am-6pm; Fri, Sat & eve of PH 7.30am-7pm; & Sun 7.30am-6.30pm.

Margaret Market Level 2: Health Verandah

Other than Ya Kun, other units on Margaret Market’s level 2 includes a Bethesda Medical clinic, an Emotional Wellness counseling center, a WeCut hair salon, and the 24-hour gym Gymm Boxx.

Just wanna give a shout-out to my fave TCM store, Fung Onn Medical Hall at #02-04 (opens daily Mon-Sat 8am-7pm; Sun 8am-12.30pm), which finally relocated from Tanglin Halt to Margaret Drive. (Yea!)

Margaret Market is at 38 Margaret Drive, Singapore 141038. Closest MRT: Queenstown
